The former two-division champion will challenge Rolly Romero for the WBA welterweight title after both sides finalized a deal for Las Vegas
Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez have agreed to fight for Romero’s WBA welterweight title on August 22 in Las Vegas, setting up one of boxing’s biggest summer matchups. The deal has been completed, with Lopez confirming during Saturday night’s broadcast that the fight is next.
The matchup had been discussed for several days, but this marks the first confirmation that both sides have reached an agreement. Romero will make the first defense of the WBA welterweight title he won earlier this year, while Lopez moves up to challenge for a world title at 147 pounds.
An official announcement with venue details is expected in the coming weeks, but the fight is now targeted for August 22 in Las Vegas. The clash pits two outspoken former world champions against each other in what is expected to be one of the summer’s biggest DAZN events.
The matchup also gives Teofimo his first opportunity to become a world champion in a third weight class after previously holding titles at lightweight and junior welterweight. Rolly, meanwhile, will look to prove his upset victory was no fluke against another former unified champion.
