  • Sugar Ray Leonard At 70 Still Stands Above Boxing’s Four Kings

Sugar Ray Leonard At 70 Still Stands Above Boxing’s Four Kings

On his 70th birthday today, Sugar Ray Leonard remains one of the few fighters who could carry boxing’s most famous nickname without sounding presumptuous. After Sugar Ray Robinson retired in 1965, “Sugar” stopped being just another boxing nickname and became something attached to greatness.

Leonard had already built a major amateur reputation before becoming a professional star. He won national Golden Gloves titles, captured two AAU championships, and later won gold at the 1975 Pan Am Games in Mexico City before becoming a household name during the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

Much of Leonard’s early professional career was guided by legendary trainer Angelo Dundee, who immediately saw championship potential in him after joining the group that helped finance his move into the professional ranks.

“I don’t know which title we’re going to win. He’s a youngster, so he may become a junior welterweight champion, a welterweight champion, or a middleweight champion. As a matter of fact, he could become a heavyweight champion.” The Ring quoted Angelo Dundee as saying early in Sugar Ray Leonard’s professional career.

Leonard eventually became the central figure of boxing’s celebrated “Four Kings” era in the 1980s, building victories over Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Wilfred Benítez. Unlike many fighters from earlier generations, Leonard fought far less often, with only 40 professional bouts compared to Robinson’s 201, but his career became one of the sport’s most carefully managed and efficient runs at the elite level.

Leonard’s last 15 fights were spread across an 18-year period marked by retirements and returns that often became the subject of criticism and jokes. Even after becoming financially secure, Leonard repeatedly returned to the ring, something The Ring described as part of the mindset shared by elite fighters who struggle to walk away from competition completely.

One story followed Leonard throughout his career. Early in his professional run, Leonard approached Robinson and asked permission to use the “Sugar” nickname. Robinson agreed and told him to “look after it.”

Few fighters were ever trusted with a nickname that carried more weight. Leonard spent the rest of his career proving why Robinson gave his approval.

  • Albert Bell, Andy Cruz Headed To May 27 Purse Bid

Albert Bell, Andy Cruz Headed To May 27 Purse Bid

The purse bid is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time during the IBF’s annual convention in Ho Tram, Vietnam.

The winner of the fight would move into position as the mandatory challenger for the IBF lightweight title, giving Andy Cruz a direct path toward a championship opportunity less than two years into his professional career.

Cruz (6-0, 3 KOs) has been moved aggressively since leaving the amateur ranks following his Olympic gold medal run for Cuba. The Matchroom-promoted lightweight already owns wins over veterans Antonio Moran and Omar Salcido despite having only six professional fights.

Albert Bell (28-0, 9 KOs) brings far more professional experience into the eliminator and has quietly remained unbeaten while fighting mostly outside the spotlight. The Cleveland native has long been viewed as a difficult style matchup because of his defensive approach and southpaw stance.

The negotiations reaching the purse bid stage suggest neither side was willing to bend enough financially to complete a deal privately.

A victory for Cruz would strengthen his standing in a crowded lightweight division that includes names such as Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, and Keyshawn Davis.

The IBF purse bid for Cruz-Bell is scheduled for May 27 in Vietnam.

If Cruz defeats Bell, he would move back into position for another fight against IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla if the titleholder remains at 135 pounds instead of moving up to 140.

  • Keith Connolly Says Zuffa Offer Changed Everything

Keith Connolly Says Zuffa Offer Changed Everything

Keith Connolly says the arrival of Zuffa Boxing changed the direction of Conor Benn’s career and altered negotiations with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom.

“The offer was multiple times higher than what they were offering,” Connolly said when discussing Benn’s move away from Matchroom. “People thought there was no competition out there at the time because DAZN was the only game in town and Zuffa popped up right around the time Conor was going into free agency.”

Connolly believes Benn’s entry into free agency came at the exact moment a new player entered the market.

“I think maybe people miscalculated that they were the only show in town and that there would be no other offers. That’s a possibility. And then a huge offer jumped out, and that’s where we’re at,” said Connolly to iFL TV.

Connolly said Benn’s team did meet with Matchroom before making the move, but claimed the numbers discussed were nowhere near the eventual offer they received elsewhere.

“We had one in New York on the week of Teofimo-Shakur, and we told them what we were expecting. They came in a lot lower than we thought they were. Since he was a free agent, we decided to test the market.”

The discussion also touched on the breakdown in communication that followed Benn’s exit from Matchroom. Connolly defended the decision to send the offer by email rather than handling everything privately over the phone.

“We covered ourselves legally by sending the offer by email, which we are supposed to do,” said Connolly. “That is a mechanism that you are supposed to do when you get an offer when a promoter has matching rights.”

Connolly added that Benn still wanted Hearn involved after the new deal was secured.

“We still want you on the team,” Connolly said. “Conor wanted Eddie to be on the team.”

  • Fabio Wardley Channels Rocky II After Dubois Loss

Fabio Wardley Channels Rocky II After Dubois Loss

The video mixed footage from the Dubois fight with scenes from Rocky II, including the famous exchange where Apollo Creed’s team urges him to walk away from Rocky Balboa after their brutal first fight.

“He’s all wrong for us, baby,” Apollo’s trainer Tony “Duke” Evers says in the scene. “We don’t need that kind of man in our life.”

The edit then cuts to Apollo responding: “Thank you,” before additional fight footage and training clips begin rolling.

Wardley activated the rematch clause earlier this week after losing his WBO heavyweight title to Dubois by 11th-round stoppage last Saturday night.

The British heavyweight dropped Dubois twice during the early rounds before eventually being worn down in one of the year’s most punishing heavyweight fights.

Wardley’s face showed heavy damage by the later rounds, leading to concerns from some fans about whether an immediate rematch is the right move.

Others viewed the Rocky II clips as a sign that Wardley has no interest in stepping away from Dubois despite the punishment he absorbed in the first fight.

The 31-year-old previously said he plans to correct the mistakes he made in the first meeting and return for the rematch later this year.

Promoter Frank Warren described the first fight as “the best heavyweight fight” he has ever promoted.

  • Keyshawn Davis struggles to make weight again ahead of Albright rematch

Keyshawn Davis struggles to make weight again ahead of Albright rematch

Keyshawn Davis weighed in over the super-lightweight limit ahead of a rematch against Nahir Albright at the Scope Arena, Norfolk, this weekend, before making 140lbs on his second attempt.

The two fighters are set to renew their rivalry at 140lbs after first facing off one division down in October 2024. Davis’ majority decision win was later overturned to a no contest when he tested positive for marijuana.

Bad blood between the pair intensified less than a year later when Albright beat Keyshawn’s older brother, Kalvin Davis, and later claimed to have been jumped by the fighting family backstage.

At today’s weigh-in, ‘The Businessman’ initially came in at 140.2lbs before weighing 140.1lbs when stripped down. Following some time away, he returned to make 140lbs exactly on his second attempt.

It is a familiar story for the undefeated American, who lost his WBO lightweight world title on the scales in June 2025 ahead of a defence against Edwin De Los Santos. He weighed 4.3lbs over the 135 limit and the fight was called off, with De Los Santos not getting his shot at the belt.

Davis – who hours before taking to the scales posted a picture on social media showing the strain of the weight cut – made his super-lightweight debut in January this year, stopping Jamaine Ortiz in the final round of their New York showdown.

Though the Albright fight goes ahead, it may be Davis’ last in this division. The 27-year-old will likely soon find himself delivering on a promise to move up to welterweight, and though the seven-pound jump is a significant one, it opens the door to intriguing clashes against the likes of Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn.

  • Keyshawn Davis Misses Weight Again Before Rematch

Keyshawn Davis Misses Weight Again Before Rematch

The weigh-in quickly turned tense after Albright appeared to send a message directly at Davis during their face-off.

“Be professional,” Albright said in a clip later posted by DAZN Boxing.

The missed weight immediately created reactions online because Davis has already dealt with weight problems before. Last year, Davis lost the WBO lightweight title on the scales after missing weight by more than four pounds ahead of his planned defense against Edwin De Los Santos.

Friday also marked the second time Davis has failed to make weight in his last three fights.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum admitted Davis is struggling to make 140 pounds and suggested the problem may continue going forward.

“Well, you know, obviously, he has trouble with the weight at 140,” Arum said to Fighthype. “The problem is that the next division is seven pounds. That’s a big difference.”

Arum also compared Friday’s miss to Davis previously missing by more than four pounds before the canceled De Los Santos fight last year.

“That was inexcusable because he missed weight by five pounds,” Arum said.

“Now here he’s missed weight by 0.1, which he’ll take off and come in under 140 or under.”

Keyshawn was later asked by DAZN what he told Albright during Friday’s face-off.

“I didn’t say nothing,” said Davis. “That’s just what I do. I knock people out.”

When asked what type of performance he expects to deliver in the rematch, Keyshawn gave a short response.

    “An unexpectable show.”

The rematch already had bad blood after their first fight in October 2023 was later changed to a no contest following Keyshawn’s positive marijuana test. Their original meeting had initially ended as a majority decision victory for Keyshawn.

  • Dave Allen weighs lightest in 7 years to produce ‘biggest upset in British boxing history’ against Hrgovic

Dave Allen weighs lightest in 7 years to produce ‘biggest upset in British boxing history’ against Hrgovic

Dave Allen has delivered on his promise to come into his clash with Filip Hrgovic in decent shape.

The fan favourite Brit has blown hot and cold throughout his career, often revealing after defeats that he could have trained harder and prepared better.

This weekend, he looks to claim the biggest scalp of his campaign in Hrgovic, the world-level, well-schooled and durable Croatian, whose only defeat has come against new world champion Daniel Dubois.

Despite still viewing a headline slot at London’s O2 Arena against Lucas Browne as the greatest achievement of his career, Allen will fight in front of 10,000 home fans at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster, and the significance of that has not passed him by.

He has clearly trainer hard, tipping the scales at 248.8lbs. It is an impressive drop from the 271 he weighed in his last outing – a first round blowout of Karim Berredjem in February. In fact, it is the lowest weight Allen has registered since his 2019 loss to David Price.

Speaking on the transformation, ‘Dazzling’ Dave said:

“I’ve just ate less chocolate, less sweets … People talk about sacrifice but I’m very fortunate really. I spend a lot of time with my family, my kids and I box for a living. Everyone in here doing 9-5, that’s a sacrifice. It would be unfair to me to talk about sacrifice, I live my dream every day. Sometimes in the gym it’s hard, sometimes I want to eat stuff, but I’m gonna walk out to 10,000 people in Doncaster against one of the best heavyweights in the world. That was my dream and I’m about to live it.”

Regardless of his shape, most see Hrgovic as too big a mountain to climb for Allen. He is aware of that, but believes he can produce one of the biggest upsets ever seen on UK shores.

“He’s a great fighter, but I’ve got no fear of him. All week he’s trying to tell me I don’t want to look at him. I couldn’t care less about Filip Hrgovic. It’s a boxing match.

“On paper I shouldn’t even be in the ring with him, but I just feel like tomorrow, in Donny, it’ll be a special night and I’m gonna get one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history.”

Should Allen fail to upset the odds, and Hrgovic comes out with the win unscathed, he is widely expected to face Moses Itauma in August.

  • Josh Padley Elevated After Galal Yafai Injury

Josh Padley Elevated After Galal Yafai Injury

Josh Padley will headline Matchroom’s June 6 card in Sheffield after Galal Yafai suffered an injury that forced the postponement of his flyweight unification fight against Ricardo Sandoval.

Matchroom confirmed Yafai sustained the injury during training camp. His WBC and WBA flyweight title fight with Sandoval will now be rescheduled for a later date.

Padley’s EBU European super featherweight title defense against Aqib Fiaz has now been elevated to the main event at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on DAZN.

The June 6 event has already gone through multiple changes during the buildup after Dalton Smith was previously removed from the card earlier this month.

Despite the setbacks, Matchroom confirmed the event will still move forward as scheduled.

Padley enters the fight after winning the European title earlier this year. Fiaz will challenge for the belt in what is now his first scheduled main event appearance on a Matchroom card.

Padley gained attention in February last year when he stepped up against former WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. Although he was stopped in the ninth round, he remained competitive during stretches of the fight.

Undefeated heavyweight prospect Leo Atang is also scheduled to appear on the card in his home region of Yorkshire.

Unbeaten prospects Adam Maca and Connor Mitchell remain on the bill as well.

Elsewhere on the undercard, Aaron Bowen faces Troy Coleman in a middleweight contest, while Ibraheem Sulaimaan fights Ibrahim Nadim for the English super featherweight title.

Matchroom also confirmed that refunds remain available through original points of purchase following the latest change to the top of the card.

  • Shakur Stevenson Asks If He’s Hall Of Fame Worthy

Shakur Stevenson Asks If He’s Hall Of Fame Worthy

The post quickly drew hundreds of reactions from boxing fans debating Stevenson’s accomplishments and whether his career already meets Hall of Fame standards.

Supporters pointed to Stevenson’s undefeated 25-0 record, his Olympic silver medal, and world titles won across four weight classes. Others argued his recent victory over Teofimo Lopez strengthened his case significantly after he moved up to 140 pounds earlier this year.

Critics focused more on the names missing from his record, especially fights against Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, and other major rivals from his era.

Some fans also pointed to Stevenson’s defensive style, which has divided opinion throughout his career despite his success. His technical approach has earned praise from boxing purists for years, while other fans continue to criticize the lack of knockouts and dramatic fights compared to more aggressive stars.

Stevenson first won a world title in 2019 and has remained unbeaten since turning professional after capturing a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Newark southpaw captured titles at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, and light welterweight during his run through four divisions.

Under International Boxing Hall of Fame rules, fighters become eligible three years after retirement.

  • Former champion vows to be the first man to KO Lomachenko after comeback announcement

Former champion vows to be the first man to KO Lomachenko after comeback announcement

Vasyl Lomachenko has been called out by a former world champion, who believes he would win by knockout if they lock horns later this year.

According to The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, Lomachenko is expected to call time on his retirement and return to action in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Ukrainian’s last outing took place in May 2024, when he claimed the IBF world lightweight title with an 11th-round finish over George Kambosos Jr.

This followed his unanimous decision defeat to Devin Haney, who many felt was fortunate to successfully defend his titles against the two-time Olympic champion.

Having cemented his legacy in both the professional and amateur codes, though, Lomachenko ultimately decided to step into retirement last June.

This was partly because the masterful southpaw had been experiencing back issues, which scuppered his plans to face Gervonta Davis towards the end of 2024.

Yet it is worth mentioning, too, that Lomachenko’s deal with Top Rank came to an end on May 12 of this year, meaning he is now a promotional free agent.

Hoping to face the 38-year-old, meanwhile, is Keyshawn Davis, who dethroned Denys Berinchyk for the WBO lightweight belt in February 2025.

But despite campaigning at 140lbs, and entering a rematch with Nahir Albright this Saturday, ‘The Businessman’ has told Fight Hub TV that he is nonetheless eager to collide with Lomachenko.

“Loma, fight me for your first fight back. Come on – let’s do it, Loma. I’ll come to Ukraine.

“You’re a legend, Loma. But if you decide to fight me, I’m knocking you out just like Berinchyk.”

It remains to be seen whether ‘Loma’ will join Davis at super-lightweight, as the more realistic option would be for him to campaign at 135lbs.
